Tips on how to get into Cal!

Berkeley 101

Hey there, Future Golden Bear! Just got my acceptance letter for EECS and I'm over the moon! Thought I'd help share some of the tips that got me here!

Course Requirements

When applying to Berkeley, or any UC school, don't overlook the unique subject requirements. These are specific courses you need to complete in high school to be eligible for admission. One that often catches people off guard is the visual and performing arts requirement. You need to complete a year-long course in dance, drama/theater, music, or visual art. This isn't just about ticking a box – it's a chance to explore your creative side and develop skills that complement your tech focus. Whether you're sculpting, painting, or learning an instrument, this requirement can actually be a fun break from all the math and science. Plus, it shows Berkeley that you're a well-rounded applicant. So don't stress about it – embrace it as an opportunity to expand your horizons!

CS ECs

When it comes to extracurricular activities (ECs) for Berkeley EECS, quality trumps quantity. Focus on activities that genuinely interest you and align with your tech aspirations. Participating in coding clubs or hackathons can be great, showing your ability to work on tech projects under pressure. Consider joining or starting a robotics team – it's a fun way to apply your skills and learn teamwork. If your school offers it, get involved in computer science honors societies or math clubs. Don't shy away from leadership roles in these groups; they demonstrate initiative and organizational skills. Outside of school, look into summer coding camps or internships at local tech companies. Even volunteering to teach basic coding to younger students can be impressive. Remember, the goal is to show your passion for tech and your ability to apply your skills in real-world scenarios. Whatever ECs you choose, make sure you're fully engaged and can speak enthusiastically about your experiences.

Speaking of hackathons: I’d highly recommend joining Queen City Hacks, a hackathon I founded a few years back, if you are in the Charlotte Area! If you’re in North Carolina, I’d also recommend UniHacks/SMathHacks, a hackathon I've helped organize and direct!

Don't underestimate the power of personal tech projects when applying to Berkeley EECS. These projects showcase your initiative, creativity, and hands-on skills – qualities that set you apart from other applicants. Whether it's building a simple app, creating a website, or tinkering with robotics, the key is to pursue something you're genuinely interested in. Start small and let your curiosity guide you. Document your process, including the challenges you faced and how you overcame them. This not only gives you great material for your application essays but also demonstrates your problem-solving abilities and passion for tech. Remember, it's not about creating the next big startup; it's about showing your willingness to learn and apply your skills outside the classroom. An amazing community for learning and growing with personal projects is Hack Club. Highly recommend you check them out.

Lastly, don't forget to showcase your uniqueness. Berkeley values diversity, so highlight what makes you stand out. Maybe you've used your tech skills to solve a community problem, or you have an unusual hobby that sparks your creativity. Whatever it is, let your personality shine through in your essays and activities. Go Bears!
